MJF Draft Policy

Mulvane Junior Football Club Draft Policy:

Number of players on a given team:

Minimum 16 Players (Discussion

Maximum (required to invoke draft process) 32 Players.

  • When a team reaches 30 players, the board should engage the head coach of this age group and begin to put a plan in place, in the event that a draft will be required.

Pre-Draft Qualifications:

If any one team reaches 32 players, they must split into 2 teams. This is critical to ensure that every child has a chance to learn the game of football and have ample opportunity to contribute on gameday(s).

A coach may approach the board as a part of the planning process to discuss next steps.  Anything outside of the “32” rostered players (to qualify for a split) must be discussed and approved by the board.

Coaching Staff:

Coaches will be asked to divide their staff as evenly as possible.

Each staff must have an evenly divided number of “returning” coaches.  A returning coach is defined as someone who has coached junior football before, whether it be for that same grade level or another.  At a minimum there must be 1 returning coach on each team.  Policy states that there can be a maximum (not a requirement) of 6 coaches per team, once the two staffs have been agreed upon by the two head coaches, an updated coaching roster must be approved by the MJF board of directors prior to the draft taking place.

Draft Process and Personnel:

The draft will be in person and a member of the MJF board of directors will officiate the process.

The order of the draft will be formatted for each team to have a selection in alternating fashion.  The first pick will be determined in person by the flip of a coin, at the scheduled time of the draft.

Coaches' children will be assigned to the same team as their parents.  Each team will be required to have an even amount of “returning players”.  A returning player is defined as someone who has played junior football in previous years (not a first-time participant).  If this is not accomplished by way of the initial draft, it will involve cooperation and discussion from each coaching staff.

Upon completion of the draft each head coach and the board member must sign and date their draft sheets attesting that approximate parity has been achieved.  At that point the two separate rosters are finalized and it is the responsibility of each head coach to communicate and lead their individual staff and players.

The appointed board member that presides over the drafting process has the authority to interject / step in if necessary.  This would only happen if the board member feels that teams are uneven, staff cannot agree on a topic, etc.  This is to ensure as fair and standard of a process as possible for the program.
